A devastating fire erupted at a restaurant in Liaoyang City, located in China’s northeastern Liaoning Province, on Tuesday, tragically claiming the lives of 22 individuals. According to official reports from state news agency Xinhua, this incident marks the latest in a troubling string of fatal accidents in the country, raising renewed concerns about fire safety in public establishments.
The exact cause of the blaze has yet to be determined. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping described the tragedy as “a deeply sobering lesson” and has instructed local authorities to prioritize medical care for the injured, swiftly investigate the source of the fire, and ensure that those responsible face accountability.
State broadcaster CCTV reported that the fire began at 12:25 p.m. local time in a restaurant situated within a residential neighborhood. While 22 lives were lost, three other individuals sustained injuries. Videos shared widely on social media platforms like X and Douyin showed intense flames engulfing the restaurant’s facade, with smoke billowing into the sky as emergency workers assisted victims on stretchers.
Emergency response efforts were immediate. Hao Peng, secretary of the Liaoning provincial Communist Party committee, confirmed that 22 fire trucks and 85 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Rescue operations concluded with all individuals evacuated from the area, although the damage had already taken a tragic toll.
This incident adds to a growing list of deadly fires and explosions across China in recent years. In April, another catastrophic fire at a nursing home in Hebei Province claimed 20 lives, prompting national scrutiny over fire regulations and building safety in residential and commercial settings.
Gas leaks have also contributed to recent tragedies. In March of last year, a gas explosion at a restaurant in Hebei killed two people and injured 26, while a similar blast in a high-rise building in Shenzhen in September resulted in one fatality. These repeated disasters have amplified calls for stricter enforcement of safety codes and preventive measures to protect the public.
